The Hardest Way

Early in the summer I met a friend

Moving through deep woods of uneven paths and surfacing roots

They observed:

You seem to like to take the hardest way

My laugh was boisterous

Ankles swollen from stumbling

Something you should know about me early

I didn’t have the words to say

I hadn’t seen another way.
